Process

The ‘Guiding Principles’ of professional coaching are:

  • Ethics
  • Client Focus
  • Motivation
  • Permission

The coach must honour confidentiality and privacy, avoid conflicts of interest, and commit to continuous self-development.

Coaching is 100% about the client`s agenda. It is his/her context, learning, and change process that matters.

Coaches build commitment by getting involved, listening, questioning, and often managing resistance.

At every stage of the coaching engagement, the right to advance - from general to specific; connecting values, needs, and goals; making progress explicit - has to be earned.

A typical coaching process entails three phases with three components each:

The first phase is contextual in nature, exploring perspectives to obtain focus. It aims to answer the question, “What`s up?”

The second phase is essentially constructive. It involves sourcing, building and setting up the content to be worked upon. It`s the “What matters?” stage, where alignment is the ultimate goal.

The third phase is all about conduct, i.e., experimentation and performance. That`s when action plans and execution occur, in a positive feedback loop around the question, “What`s next?”

Once the trigger gap is bridged, the coaching engagement at hand is deemed concluded or, occasionally, it continues as mentorship.

At Wedgebloom, although no particular coaching philosophy is strictly followed, the Co-Active Model is the one more often applied.

The Co-Active Coaching model, developed by Henry Kimsey-House et al., is a relationship-centric model and encompasses:

  • Four ‘Cornerstones’ (fundamental beliefs underscoring co-active interactions):
    • People are naturally creative, resourceful and whole
    • Dance in this moment
    • Focus on the whole person
    • Evoke transformation
  • Five ‘Contexts’ (points of contact between coach and coachee):
    • Listening
    • Intuition
    • Curiosity
    • Deepen / Forward
    • Self-management
  • Three `Core Principles` (aspects of a high-quality life):
    • Fulfillment
    • Balance
    • Process
